Synopsis

Ma and Pa Smith, who are crossing the plains in a wagon along with their son, are robbed and attacked by a gang of ragged outlaws. Smith, Jr. engages in a shoot-out with the outlaws, killing one of them, but his parents die from their wounds, and Smith discovers that his father's most treasured possession, a ring, has been stolen. After trudging through the wilderness for several days, a half-starved Smith reaches the town of Pecos, where Sheriff John Law organizes a posse to track down the murderers; however, the posse loses the trail of the killers, and Smith, undeterred, makes a vow to find the man wearing his father's ring and avenge the deaths of his parents. As Smith slowly regains his health, he is given the nickname "Smokey" because of his amazing shooting skill, and once he has recovered, he bids farewell to Sheriff Law in order to hunt down the outlaws. On the way out of Pecos, Smith happens by a stagecoach that is in the midst of being robbed. He goes to the rescue and saves both Sheriff Law and a large shipment of gold. The sheriff then makes Smith a deputy, and Smith decides to stay in Pecos so that he can infiltrate the gang responsible for the stagecoach robbery attempt. In the meantime, the gang plots against its despotic leader Blaze, whose primary concern is to steal enough money to send his stepdaughter Bess back East. Smith is readily accepted into the gang, but later the entire gang defects in order to join the rival Gentry gang. Before leaving, Kent, the leader of the revolt, disables Blaze by blinding him with lye and attempts to abduct Bess, but Smith intervenes and rescues her. After shooting Smith in the shoulder, Kent escapes, and as Bess tends the wound, Smith suddenly spots his father's ring, which Bess informs him was left behind by Kent. Smith heads for Pecos to alert the sheriff, and Blaze prepares a trap for Kent by using Bess as a lure, but is subsequently killed by Kent during a scuffle. When Smith arrives, Kent draws his gun, and Smith kills him. After comforting Bess, Smith rides off to join a group of lawmen planning to ambush the treacherous Gentry gang. During a protracted gunfight, Smith manages to reach the gang's mounted machine gun and wins the battle by sending the gang running straight into the ambush set by the sheriff and his men. Smith is wounded, but he will be cared for by Bess, who anxiously awaits his return.
