Synopsis
Depressed by the news of his partner's suicide, New York advertising executive Tom Anderson leaves home to supervise the filming of a commercial. On the set, Tom is attracted to Laurie, a young actress whose attention is occupied by the director, Easton, with whom she once had an affair. Tom learns of a party to be held later that day at Martin's Greenwich Village apartment, and he decides to attend in the hopes of becoming better acquainted with Laurie. He soon becomes depressed and leaves to walk by the river. In the meantime, Laurie is rebuffed in her attempt to rekindle the affair with Easton, who is preoccupied with his career and plans to marry Tom's secretary, Cindy. Laurie leaves the party and meets Tom near the river. He confesses his love, but she remains indifferent and returns to Martin's house to join the few remaining guests in a desperate attempt to have an orgy. Once more rejected by Easton, Laurie fights off the drunken Martin and goes to a nearby tavern. She fails to notice Easton, who is waiting outside for her, and by chance she meets Tom again. She accepts his invitation to go with him to a hotel room, but after they make love she makes it clear that she has no interest in his problems. His depression intensified, Tom returns home and quarrels with his wife, Kit, who reveals her own infidelity. His marriage in ruins, Tom goes to a neighborhood bar. Through the haze of too many drinks, he thinks he sees his late business partner outside. He runs into the street and is struck and killed by a passing car.
