Synopsis

Joe Daley is the toughened underworld leader of a downtown mob, but he undergoes a reformation when Sadie, a golddigging showgirl, consents to marry him. Her dismay forces her to team with Joe's crosstown rival, Blackie Culver, in framing Joe for the theft of a hundred grand, which he was actually trying to return to District Attorney John Carlson as evidence of his resolution. Joe is sent up for 5 years but, duped by Sadie's solicitous visits, remains unaware of her complicity, deceit, and continuing adultery. She and Blackie further deceive Joe that the D. A. has designs upon Sadie, and she implores him to escape and avenge her "honor." He does so, avoiding the machine-gunning guards, but crashes on a motorcycle and is discovered by Elsa Langdon, who rescues him and has her plastic surgeon father remake his battered visage. Joe returns to the city unrecognized, still bent upon his revenge, but through his disguise is shown Goldie's treachery. She succumbs to a bullet meant for him, and Joe (with his dog, Mugs) returns to Elsa and her innocent pastoral life, to start anew.
