Synopsis

Constantis and Yorghis, two close friends in a poverty-ridden Greek village on the isle of Lesbos, find that sponge diving is the only occupation open in the area to men of their background. Constantis owns his own ships, but they are rendered useless when the town's only rich citizen, a powerful matriarch known as "The Lady," seizes them until he can pay his debts. "The Lady" has three daughters, one of whom, Thalia, is pursued by Yorghis, whose mother wants him to settle down with a wife. Thalia does not love Yorghis but finds the affections of any man preferable to the incestuous sex life of her two spinster sisters. When diving season begins, the men visit "The Lady" to discuss ship rental terms, but she raises their rental fees. Thalia meets Constantis, who is living with an English barmaid; and during the negotiations, she becomes so attracted to him that she seduces him and supplies him with enough money to reclaim his boats. Constantis finally rejects her, however, out of loyalty to Yorghis. In spite of "The Lady"'s strong disapproval of any courtship on the part of her daughters, Thalia becomes engaged to Yorghis, but she finds her desire for Constantis overpowering, and she runs off with him during her engagement party.
