Synopsis

Iris Markey, the wife of a criminal lawyer who defends gangsters, asks her husband James to give up protecting the underworld, but he refuses. She leaves him and works at a charitable clinic with David Lee, an old friend. James's disreputable practise has provided him with wealth, but his wife's departure robs him of his emotional well-being. After getting an acquittal for Louie Joe, a mob leader, James becomes an alcoholic and loses his business and his home. Reduced to living on the streets, he goes to his wife's clinic for a hand out, but leaves without being seen by her. A boy, Chubby Dennis, befriends him, giving him shelter with him and his father. Chubby's friendship inspires James, and he regains some self-respect. After Chubby is killed by a stray bullet from a gangster's gun, James, suspecting Louie Joe, obtains the position of special prosecutor from the district attorney. By using a special sound recording device and leading Louie Joe to believe he is his defense lawyer, James gets a confession. The recording of the conversation is heard in the trial, and Louie Joe is convicted. James and Iris are reconciled.
