Synopsis

Kate Adams, a failed actress, is in partnership with bootlegger Frank Bowman. He is so furious that Kate loves Joe Strickland, a drunk, instead of him, that he shoots Joe. When they investigate the shooting, the police discover the bootlegging operation, and Kate and Bowman are sent to jail. Three months later, Kate is released from prison. To celebrate her release, she and Joe get drunk. Afterward, she walks out of the party, announcing her intention to "go straight." She is employed as a secretary by millionaire Roger Van Dorn, who eventually marries her. Soon after they return from their honeymoon, Bowman is released from prison. Determined to get revenge on Kate, whom he holds responsible for his imprisonment, he applies for a job as her chauffeur and then blackmails her. Inspired by Kate's example, Joe also reforms, gets married and starts a yacht building business. He and Kate meet again when Roger buys her a yacht. She tells her problems to Joe, who advises her to confess, but she is afraid her husband will never forgive her. Finally, Bowman demands that Kate return to bootlegging with him. She refuses, but before Bowman can reveal her secret, Slug, Joe's helper and old friend, forces him off the road to his death.
