Synopsis

Teenaged Maria wants to emulate her voluptuous neighbor, Eilene, but Maria's mother and the old janitor, Pop, tell her a story that they hope will end the idolatry. Johnnie and her husband, Frankie, move into the apartment building. Frankie does not want to settle down, and upon discovering that she is pregnant, he deserts her. Johnnie loses the baby, but she overcomes her depression when she starts a new life. She dyes her hair, takes a job as a waitress, and changes her name to Mae. After a brief romance with a Mr. Duck, she is again impregnated and abandoned. She finds consolation with her neighbor, Charley, who is so sympathetic that he proposes to her. He breaks the engagement, however; and Mae, left in despair, gives her baby away for adoption. She becomes a prostitute and changes her name to Eilene. Marie is shocked to realize that the story is about the neighbor she admires. Meanwhile, Billy, a young sailor, falls in love with Eilene and proposes to her, but he accidentally breaks a doll that she has kept since her marriage to Frankie. Angrily, she turns Billy away; he leaves and shoots himself. Time passes, and Eilene realizes that her fate will never change.
