Synopsis
Cowboy Red Ryder, who lives with his Indian ward, Little Beaver, and aunt, The Duchess, in Las Vegas, Nevada, promises to help schoolteacher Ann Carter, who wants him to speak to her wild sweetheart, Tom Blackwell. Red finds Tom drunk in the saloon owned by Dan Sedley, cautions him to grow up and warns him that he is disappointing his father, territorial judge Homer T. Blackwell. Red's lecture is interrupted, however, by an attempted bank robbery. Red foils the robbery and retrieves the money bags, which he returns to bank president Arthur Stanton. Unknown to Red, Stanton has embezzled $40,000 from his bank and, in order to hide the shortage, asked Sedley to stage the robbery. Later, Stanton sees another opportunity to protect himself when Blackwell announces that he is going to cut Tom out of his will. The Duchess and Ann overhear Blackwell make his proclamation, and despite Ann's pleas to give Tom another chance, Blackwell refuses and asks Stanton to bring a list of his securities to his office that night. Soon after, Stanton and Sedley urge Tom to visit his father that night and reconcile with him. Tom agrees, but when he attempts to talk to Blackwell, the judge angers him and Tom storms out. Tom quickly regrets his harsh words, however, and tells Sedley that he will make it up with Blackwell in the morning. Sedley then sneaks into the judge's office and kills him with a derringer, and Red, who has been appointed sheriff, is forced to arrest Tom due to the circumstantial evidence against him. Tom goes along quietly, but when Red has a newspaper story printed stating that he has new evidence of Tom's innocence, the worried Stanton orders Sedley to stir up a lynch mob to take care of Tom. Stanton's goal is to eliminate Tom as Blackwell's heir and then use the judge's large estate to cover the embezzled funds. In order to protect Tom from the mob, Red releases him to the Duchess, then tells Stanton that he is hiding in Ann's schoolhouse. Red's suspicions of Stanton are confirmed when Stanton then sends Sedley to the schoolhouse to kill Tom. Sedley is mortally wounded by the waiting Red, but he confesses to the judge's murder before dying. Still needing evidence of Stanton's complicity, Red sends Tom to his office, as if for help. Stanton draws a gun on Tom, but Red is captures him before he shoots. Soon after, Stanton is convicted, and the reformed Tom is ready to settle down with Ann. When Tom vows to use some of his inheritance to elect Red to the office of territorial governor, however, Red runs off with Little Beaver.
