Synopsis
The law firm of Turnbull and Johnson is experiencing serious financial difficulties when Henry Rockwell, an attorney for Trans Atlantic Airways, brings a case to his old friend Wallace Turnbull. Rockwell's client wants to buy a lake owned by Eli Potter, an old man who hates airplanes, and Rockwell hires Wallace to persuade Potter to sell the land. Accompanied by process server Banjo Page, Wally immediately leaves for the town of Kerricksville to visit Potter. Upon arriving in town, Wally is unable to contact the elderly Potter, who is being sought to appear in court on a $100,000 breach of promise suit filed by Pansy Hawkins. Upon returning to his hotel, Wally is summoned to Washington by Rockwell. Meanwhile, Banjo has located Potter and convinced him that Wally, the greatest lawyer in the world, can win his lawsuit in exchange for the land around the lake as payment. Upon learning that Wally is in Washington, Banjo convinces Wally's secretary, Alice Hinsdale, who has abandoned her law career to become secretary to the man she loves, to take the case. Posing as Wally's partner Johnson, Alice travels to Kerricksville to defend Potter, while in Washington, Wally and Rockwell decide that Wally should return and offer to represent Pansy, in hopes that she will award them the property if she wins the suit. Upon his return to town, Wally becomes furious when he discovers that Alice is representing Potter. When he refuses to allow her to explain the situation, Alice, resenting his stubbornness, decides to go through with the assignment. In the courtroom, Wally clashes with Alice, but when Pansy breaks down, Potter takes her in his arms and agrees to marry her, and Wally, realizing his unfairness to Alice, proposes to her.
