Synopsis
Naoko and her husband, Eiichi, live in a modern housing development near Tokyo. One night they are awakened by a nearby fire which destroys some of the shacks inhabited by a group of ragpickers. The next morning Naoko explores the ruins and finds herself fascinated by the poverty that is so different from her own lifestyle. She discovers that Ikona, a ragpicker, was one of her husband's college classmates, and she invites him to her home. The following day a trophy belonging to Eiichi is missing, and it is apparent that it was stolen by Ikona. Although Eiichi is angry, he yields to his wife's pleas and offers the ragpicker a job, which he refuses. A short time later, while Eiichi is away on business, Naoko learns that Ikona's friend Hanako, a little blind girl, is ill, and she takes the child home to look after her. When Eiichi returns, he berates his wife for jeopardizing their social position and sends the little girl to a charity hospital. As the shacks are being torn down to make room for a golf course, a group of boys from the development steal Ikona's dog. Naoko joins Ikona in the search for his pet, and they find it dying at the bottom of a dry well. Ikona picks up the dog and walks away. After learning that Ikona has taken the blind girl out of the hospital, Naoko lies awake at night, imagining that she still hears the sound of Ikona's dog barking.
