Synopsis
Cassie Cook is discharged from Polly Voo's "teashop" because of her disorderly conduct, and she decides to become a "refined lady" for the purpose of gaining the patronage of a Caucasian. Meanwhile, McKinney, a derelict, is tricked by Repen, a Chinese detective, into admitting he is an escaped convict, but he evades capture with the aid of a Chinese who helps him board a train, where he meets Cassie. Each assumes the other to be respectable, neither having any idea of the other's past. Returning to Shanghai together, their train is attacked by bandits; McKinney bargains to surrender himself to Repen if the latter will remain silent about the past, and Cassie does the same. The detective is recognized by a mandarin as the despoiler of his daughter and is killed in revenge. Cassie and McKinney proclaim their love and unworthiness and plan to start life anew in America.
