Synopsis
Ted Mathews and his girl friend, Terry James, have a highway accident in which Ted believes he has killed the driver of the other car. Shocked into amnesia by the crash, he wanders about until he is picked up by Noah Turnbull, a traveling evangelist. Under Noah's tutelage, and using the name of Tad Morgan, Ted becomes a world-renowned preacher. Terry learns of her former boyfriend's new identity and decides to blackmail Ted with the help of her lover, Pete. Confronted by a face from the past, Ted's memory returns and Terry realizes he is unaware that the driver of the other car was not killed but merely knocked into unconsciousness. Not satisfied with blackmail, she gets him drunk and marries him in a phony wedding ceremony. As Terry's demands increase, the nearly insane Ted pushes her off a bridge and returns to his congregation thinking he is at last free of her. She survives the fall, returns to her apartment, mistakes the sleeping Pete for Ted and kills him. Discovering her tragic error, she rushes to Ted's home obsessed with the idea of killing him. He wrests the pistol from her hand and strangles her to death. Filled with despair, Ted goes to his tabernacle and suffers a fatal heart attack as he prays for forgiveness.
