Synopsis

A look at Belgium's dark colonial past as seen through the relationship of a Rwandan woman who was betrothed to a Belgian territorial agent in Rwanda in the early 1920s. Together, they had three children, but at the end of his term in the country the agent marries a young Belgian woman and returns with her to Belgium. While abandoning his Rwandan wife and two sons, he takes only his daughter Suzanne with him, believing she would have a chance at a better life in Belgium. Decades later the agent's granddaughter, documentary filmmaker Nathalie Borgers, breaks the long family silence revealing the real story of what happened to Suzanne after leaving her homeland.
