Synopsis

While driving her faithless husband, Robert, home from a party, heiress Jean Wells runs into a pedestrian and knocks his body into a nearby lake. Her fear that she has killed someone is substantiated the next day when an embittered stranger, Joe, arrives and threatens blackmail. But when the frantic Jean attempts suicide Joe confesses he saw the pedestrian walk away from the scene of the accident. Determined to find out for herself, Jean returns to the lake--and uncovers a muddy corpse. She is deranged by the incident and pleads with Joe to make love to her, but he refuses to take advantage of her. Joe then starts an investigation and discovers that the body is that of Jean's lawyer, who had learned of Robert's affair with a young girl named Wilma. The lovers had murdered the lawyer and then arranged the accident, using Wilma's father as the pedestrian, in order to put the blame on Jean and gain control over her inheritance money. Although Robert succeeds in drugging Joe, he is prevented from murdering him by the appearance of Jean. The failure of his plan causes Robert's mind to snap, and he kills Wilma's father and flees up the face of a huge dam. Wilma is waiting and she pushes him to his death. As the police arrive, Jean is comforted by the reformed Joe.
