Synopsis
One morning, roommates Sally Adams and Rita Wilson are awakened by their landlady, Mrs. Dixon, with a letter for Rita. The letter is from Rita's ailing mother, asking for money. Rita, a carhop at a drive-in diner, can ill afford to send money home, but she is reluctant to ask Bob Grey, the milkman who is in love with her, for help. At Sally's urging, Rita reluctantly agrees to a date with the wealthy Jack Thorndyke. During an evening at the Club Tropical, Rita tells Jack of her ambition to be a model and accepts a gold watch from him. When Jack takes Rita home, they are sighted by Bob, and after the two men have a fistfight, Rita tells Bob never to come again. When Rita's aunt Lucy writes saying that Rita's mother needs $500 for an operation, Rita asks Jack to introduce her to artist Stuart Bannerman, who needs a model for his painting of "the spirit of youth." After several weeks working for Bannerman, Rita sends $400 home and accepts Jack's invitation to a party at his penthouse apartment, where Jack fills her with drinks until she loses conciousness, then takes advantage of her in his bedroom. When Rita awakens, she is dazed and ashamed. Jack refuses her calls, and she moves out of the apartment that she and Sally share. As Rita becomes increasingly ill, her jobs parallel her decline, from secretary to waitress to seamstress. Finally she faints on a street corner and is taken to a hospital. Notified about Rita's condition, Jack professes not to know who she is. Upon her recovery, Rita returns to Sally, and learns that her mother has died. Bob has been asking for Rita during her absence, and she agrees to marry him when she realizes he loves her despite her past. Meanwhile, Sally has fallen in love with Jack, who tells her the same lines he told Rita. When the couple appear at Bob and Rita's housewarming party, Rita tries to warn Sally. The two men engage in a fight, and Jack strikes a vicious blow to Bob's head with a poker. The police, called by Sally, arrive in time to provoke Jack into running in front of a car, and he is run over. In the hospital, Bob recovers with Rita beside him.
