Synopsis

Performers Hope Holloway and Gabby Trent audition for a job at the Plantation roadhouse. At the same time, racketeers Jigsaw Kennedy and Benny the Bounce are looking for Willoughby, the owner of the rival Harmony house. When Jigsaw and Benny attempt to lean on Willoughby for fifty per cent of his profits, he tells them that the Plantation is taking all of his business. Jigsaw and Benny decide to close down the opposition, and they run everyone out of the club--proprietor, orchestra and customers--in the midst of Hope and Gabby's audition. When the young women finish their number, they discover the house is empty, so, with nowhere else to go, they decide to spend the night there. The next morning, band leader Con Conway arrives with his band, Con Conway's Texans. Hope and Gabby tell them about the management leaving and the band becomes distressed, as they are now stranded, having spent all their money getting to this "gig." Hope then suggests that they pool their talents and reopen the Plantation themselves, as the previous owners left behind plenty of food and liquor. Con and his band go to work drumming up publicity for the grand re-opening, arranging for free newspaper and radio advertisements. When the gangsters learn of the performers' plans, Jigsaw and Benny try to strong-arm Gabby, but she is able to defeat them at their own game and throws them out of the roadhouse. Con, however, does not know who they are, so he hires the two mugs as waiters. On the opening night, Jigsaw and Benny do their best to ruin things, but the audience mistakes the chaotic waiters for part of the club's entertainment and cheer them on. Willoughby then shows up at the roadhouse and states that he holds the lease on the Plantation. One of Con's singers, Mona Mitchell, recognizes Willoughby as a fugitive confidence man, and he is forced to flee. The roadhouse becomes a huge success, and Con and Hope finally declare their love for each other.
