Synopsis

A man leaps from a moving train and goes to a small Polish village where he claims to have lived before. Although no one remembers him, the stranger does find refuge with a family there, but his past remains a secret. All that he will divulge is that he has changed his name from Kowalski to Malinowski because he is being hunted by unidentified people who wish to see him dead. Mysteriously and insidiously, the stranger creates an atmosphere of anxiety and death, and the almost apathetic villagers respond to it by exposing their innermost feelings. After apparently curing two dying children, the man seduces his host's daughter, and during an annual town celebration he teaches the villagers the steps of the salto, a dreamlike dance which brings them completely under his hypnotic influence. The illusion--or reality--of the man's power is broken by the sudden appearance of a woman accompanied by two children. She claims the man is her husband, a woman-chasing charlatan, and the townspeople hurl stones and force the stranger to board another passing train.
