Synopsis
While on a business trip to the United States, Riccardo Vanzi, a 40-year-old bachelor, becomes so enchanted with an old friend's story of marrying a rich widow and then divorcing her to marry a younger woman that he decides to become a citizen by finding an American wife. He selects his first prospect, Jenny, at Miami Beach. After a pleasant evening together, he discovers that she has a husband at Cape Kennedy. Riccardo is flown by the wealthy Nita in her private plane to a huge party at her Texas ranch. After he discovers her succession of husbands, Riccardo returns to New York on a commercial airliner. En route he meets the stewardess Louise. Although the two make love, Louise laughs at his proposal of marriage. Hitchhiking to New Orleans, Riccardo has a brief encounter with a teenager but is afraid of her. His next lover is Nicole, a divorcée with children and a house in the suburbs. Riccardo's praise of Nicole, however, persuades her former husband to seek a reconciliation. Riccardo returns to New York for the final humiliation: he proposes to a call girl who rejects him. The fruits of his American adventure are a very angry boss and a return flight back to his Italian fiancée of 13 years.
