Synopsis

John Hale, a struggling American novelist who leads a precarious existence, unexpectedly inherits a small fortune from an uncle and decides to purchase the famous Baden castle in Latavia. He and his faithful Negro valet, Rusty, find the castle allegedly haunted; but in a secret chamber, John discovers its former mistress, Countess von Baden, in hiding to escape detection as the kidnaper of her child, whom the court has awarded to her divorced husband. He befriends her and helps her to escape but is himself detained by the count, who confiscates the aspiring author's entire fortune. Back in his New York boardinghouse, John slaves to produce an exciting novel, but the countess arrives with her father, an American oil king, who reimburses John's loss. John is thus happily reunited with the countess, who assures him of her love.
