Brief Synopsis

In Hungary, the national movement led by Kossuth has been crushed and the Austrian hegemony re-established, but partisans carry on with violent actions. In order to root out the guerilla, the army rounds up suspects and jails them in an isolated fort. The authorities do not have the identity of the guerilla leaders, who are supposed to be present among the prisoners. However, they know enough about some of the suspects to apply perfidious forms of coercion effectively.

Synopsis

Some years after the abortive revolution of 1848, Hapsburg monarch Franz Josef of Austria ruthlessly eliminates Hungarian nationalists. Attempting to capture the famous revolutionary Sándor Rósza and his band, the Austrian army sequesters hundreds of peasants in an impregnable stockade, isolating key prisoners. So segregated, prisoner János Gajdor turns informer. The acknowledged murderer of two herdsmen, Gajdor is falsely offered his freedom on the condition that he identify an inmate with a larger number of victims. A self-confessed assassin of six is executed after an escape attempt before he can be named by Gajdor. The informer's next target is the outlaw Veszelka. After the Austrians publicly strip and beat the suspect's wife, he and two comrades leap to their deaths rather than betray the Hungarian cause. Now that his usefulness is exhausted, the captors open Gajdor's cell door, and the prisoners strangle the traitor. The Austrian interrogators exploit filial relationships, causing father and son Kubai to betray terrorist Torma in order to save each other. Torma's punishment is forestalled by an announcement of general conscription. The Austrians arrange a test of horsemanship between Torma and the older Kubai which Torma easily wins. As a prize, he is directed to choose from the stockade's inmates a core cavalry squadron. Following the selection Torma boasts that he has chosen the revolutionary band of Sándor Rósza. The Austrians announce that Rósza, who has eluded capture, has been pardoned, but they seize his contingent, which Torma has unwittingly exposed.
