Synopsis

Charles Denton, head writer for Livid Love Tales , a romance magazine owned by J. Franklin Blank, conceives a stunt to boost sales when he meets Cynthia Brown after she drops a shoe on his head on a rainy day. Seeing the way her stepmother and two stepsisters order her around, Charlie proposes a contest in which each entrant must write an essay on the subject, "Why I am the modern Cinderella," and subscribe to the magazine. Although thousands of subscriptions pour in, none of the entries are very good, so Charlie suggests that Cynthia enter and helps her write her essay. Her letter is by far the best, but Gwen de la Rue, Blank's girl friend, considers herself the sure winner. At the ball where the winner is to be announced, Gwen has handpicked the judges. By accident, a member of the audience is seated on stage, and the crowd insists that he remain as one of the judges in place of Blank. This man casts the deciding vote in favor of Cynthia. Her first evening as the modern Cinderella starts with a ride in a Rolls Royce to a penthouse apartment complete with butler and maid. At midnight, before Charlie rushes off to write his report of her first day, Cynthia asks him if he ever thinks about love, because she has fallen in love with him. He, however, sees her only as a promotional gimmick. Later, in an effort to let him know her feelings, she suggests that Cinderella needs a Prince Charming. His response is to instigate another contest to find the perfect man, who will then marry Cynthia. Cynthia is not enthusiastic about the plan, but in the end, convinced by Charlie's cynical attitude toward love, she agrees. Charlie begins to have second thoughts about Cynthia going through with the scheme, but Rex Bruce, the winner, is too interested in the money and publicity to call off the marriage. At the football stadium where the wedding is to take place during half time, Charlie begs Cynthia to reconsider, but she throws his own words about love back at him. Refusing to allow her to become a human guinea pig, Charlie picks her up and carries her away. Gwen forces Blank to marry her so that the crowd waiting for the Cinderella wedding will have a wedding to watch. Meanwhile, Cynthia says yes to Charlie's proposal.
