Synopsis

Larry Sutton arrives at the Ballard radium mine to take over as chief engineer, and investigate the murder of the former engineer. He allies himself with deputy sheriff Tex Murdock, who is conducting the investigation of the murder of Adolph Borg, and who suspects Larry's brother-in-law Parsons to be the killer. Two more people, Jim Ballard's niece Flora and nephew Fritz, mysteriously die, and all the suspects have alibis. While the investigation continues, Jim, who is apparently an invalid, takes a turn for the worse, and Larry falls in love with Jim's other niece Rita. After receiving a telegram from Larry, Mrs. Ballard returns to the ranch, and when Mrs. Borg, the housekeeper, tries to prevent her from seeing Jim, Larry helps her upstairs. They discover that "Jim" is actually Adolph Borg, and that he and his wife had killed Jim sometime earlier during a takeover attempt by the Borg family. After a struggle with Larry, Adolph falls to his death. Mrs. Borg, her son John and their Chinese servant Ling Yat are sentenced to twenty years in prison. Tex is made sheriff, and Larry and Rita set up housekeeping on a ranch in Hawaii.

Notes

Zane Grey's unpublished story was called "Golden Dreams." The film's working title was The Vanishing Pioneer. The title card of the print viewed reads: "Favorite Films Corp. presents Zane Grey's The Fighting Westerner." The film was shot on location at the Doble mine and at the stamping mill on Gold Mountain in Big Bear Valley, CA. In 1928 Paramount released The Vanishing Pioneer, which was based on the same source, directed by John Waters and starring Jack Holt and Sally Blane (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1921-30; F2.6021). Although a modern source cites M-G-M's 1922 film Golden Dreams as being based on the same source, the plot of that film differs markedly from both Paramount's 1928 and 1935 films (see AFI Catalog of Feature Films, 1921-30; F2.2167).
