Synopsis
During a range war, powerful cattle barons try to run independent ranchers off their land by burning their ranch houses and posting notices that intimidate them into selling. Cattleman Evans, backed by cattle baron Walton, wants to buy Bob Morgan's ranch, but Morgan is only the caretaker for his niece, May Carter, who is arriving soon. In the meantime, the ranchers organize a cattlemen's association and send for Tim Corwin, a hired killer from the cattlemen's association in Durango, Wyoming. When Tim arrives, he teaches Bob's son Buddy how to shoot. Walton then appoints Jerry, one of his gang, to kill Tim, and Tim is forced to retreat to a cabin in the mountains. Walton, still trying to get his hands on Morgan's ranch, sends a fake telegram saying May will be arriving late. Tim discovers Walton's scheme to kidnap May, however, and safely escorts her from the train to his cabin. Walton, however, locates the cabin, and in the scuffle, Bob is killed. Walton's henchman convinces May he was with Bob looking for her, after which Walton accuses Tim of murdering Bob and abducting May. Although the sheriff's posse tries to arrest him, Tim makes it back to the Morgan ranch, where Buddy is standing guard. In the night, Walton's gang arrives and Buddy shoots a warning shot for Tim, who escapes. The next day, Evans, pretending to be Bob's friend, asks May to sell, but discovers that Bob signed over his portion of the ranch to Tim. Now May needs Tim's signature to sell, but believes he killed Bob. Tim, unaware of Evans' duplicity, sends Buddy to him for safekeeping. Evans then tells Tim that May wants him to act on her behalf regarding the ranch. Later, when Walton and Evans meet, Buddy overhears their plan for that night. Porter, Bob's real killer, goes to the Morgan ranch to kill Tim, but Tim is waiting for him and takes him to the sheriff, who clears Tim and arrests Evans and Walton. Tim then proposes to May.
