Synopsis
Michael, young ruler of the small kingdom of Balanca, falls in love with Marie de Floriet, niece of his prime minister, and abdicates so as to marry her. His family, however, would have him marry Ena, a rich and eligible visiting princess, and the prime minister and Nicky, Michael's cousin, scheme to show Marie in a compromising situation to quell his passion. Marie agrees to the scheme, convinced that the kingdom is more important than her love. Michael "surprises" Nicky and Marie in bed together; he denounces her and tosses her to his officers as he leaves the inn. Subsequently Michael returns and, determined to renounce his crown, flees to the border with Marie. The border guards request the young couple to return to the palace, however, when the people demand Michael and Marie as their monarchs.
