Synopsis

Tom Brandon, a physician, is forced to work as an ambulance driver for a hospital because he lacks funds to open his own practice. One night, he rushes to the hospital to propose to his girl friend Mary, a nurse, and after she accepts, they go to Jimmy Grosso's nightclub to celebrate. That night, Tom's best friend, policeman Dan O'Connor, is murdered by Grosso. Grosso, a gangster, is wounded during the gunfight, and his right-hand man, Lenny, brings Tom in from the club to treat his injury. Tom agrees to work for Grosso and take a vow of silence, then lies to Mary that he treated a pair of drunks. Later, Tom reports his experience to the police chief, who asks him to work undercover. Tom refuses until he learns that Grosso may have killed Dan, and then consents to an arrangement by which only he and the chief will know that he is working for the police. Mary breaks off their engagement after Tom quits the ambulance job and refuses to offer an explanation, and informs him that she is adopting Dan's orphaned daughter Betty. A month later, Grosso is puzzled by the frequent attacks on and arrests of his thugs. Tom visits Mary to try to win her back, but she refuses his entreaties, and only little Betty is sympathetic to "Dr. Tom." Tom tries to quit undercover work, but the police have just arrested Frankie, one of Grosso's main killers, and the chief assures Tom he will not have to continue the charade much longer. Unknown to them, Frankie has seen Tom in the chief's office. When Betty develops a fever, Mary reluctantly calls Tom for help. Betty is comforted by Tom's presence, and he and Mary begin to make up, but are interrupted by Grosso's thugs, who demand that Tom return to the nightclub. Before Tom arrives, Frankie, who has just been released from jail, tells Grosso that Tom is double-crossing them, and Grosso plots revenge. After Tom is brought back to tend to Lenny, who has been shot, he calls for an ambulance to take Lenny to a country hospital. Grosso and Frankie take the ambulance drivers hostage and lock them in a closet, then steal their truck. The drivers call the police after they burst out of the closet, and when the patrol cars close in on the ambulance, Tom deliberately crashes the vehicle near a police station, and the criminals are arrested. Later, Tom recuperates in the hospital and is visited by Mary, who informs him that he will be able to use the reward money to open his own practice. With their trouble behind them, Tom and Mary finally reunite.
