Synopsis

Lee Jameson is winning all the events at the rodeo when he receives a letter from his old friend, Caleb Scott, warning of trouble brewing at home in Pasco Basin. Returning home, Lee visits the Madison ranch where he sees his sweetheart, Jean Madison, and meets Matthew Kirby, a land promoter who has the support of Jean's father Joel. Lee incurs Kirby's wrath when he joins Kirby's opposition led by Scott, who as publisher of the town paper, has questioned the promoter's motives. When Scott prints an article attacking Kirby as a fraud, Kirby orders his thug Magee to attack the newspaper office and kill Scott. Lee captures one of Scott's assassins, but when the town sheriff, who is working with Kirby, lets the man escape, Lee decides to organize his own gang of vigilantes. In response, Kirby frames Lee for Madison's shooting and undertakes a campaign of arson and terror, which he blames on Lee. Kirby's campaign is so convincing that even Jean and Lee's friend, Bruce Moore, turn against him. When a determined Lee rallies his vigilantes, however, Kirby places his men at strategic spots in the street to protect himself as he tries to escape in a buckboard filled with money that he has collected from the ranchers. As the vigilantes battle Kirby's thugs, Lee pursues Kirby and brings him back to town. With Kirby exposed, the ranchers of the valley proclaim Lee a hero and he reconciles with Jean.
