Synopsis
Heiress Norma Britt decides to marry philandering Lester Vaughn, despite of the misgivings of her artist friend Molly Borden. Vaughn has been having an affair with Molly's model, Rose, who becomes upset when she learns of Vaughn's plans to marry Norma. DeWitt Porter, a wealthy and cultured collector of antiques, lives in the studio next to Molly. She invites Porter to a party, hoping he will make Norma forget about Vaughn. At Akoor's curio shop, Jennie, the shop owner's daughter, stops Porter from buying a rare Buddha, explaining that it is cursed. She adds that her little brother is crippled, a fact that she attributes to the god's anger at Akoor for marrying a white woman. Speeding to Molly's party, Norma crashes into Porter's car and wrecks it. Porter and Norma quarrel over the accident and Norma becomes so angry that she drives away. When Porter arrives at the party, Molly is amazed to learn that he and Norma have already met. Later Akoor informs Porter that he will sell the Buddha, despite his fear that such an action will bring a curse on his house, as he needs the money to pay for his son's operation. Akoor then prepares poisoned wine for Porter as he plans to keep the Buddha, thereby avoiding its curse, while still obtaining the money he needs to save his son. In the meantime, Vaughn persuades Norma to sail with him to Europe and be married at sea. At the same time that Norma leaves Molly's studio for the ship, Porter departs for Akoor's shop, and they meet in the apartment elevator. The elevator then becomes trapped between floors. Several hours later Rose finds them and Porter asks her to call Vaughn and the rescue squad. When the building superintendent discovers the stuck elevator, he mistakenly pulls a switch that causes a short circuit and sets fire to the elevator shaft. After the fire department rescues the pair, Jennie warns Porter of her father's plan. Porter drives Norma to the docks, but the ship carrying Vaughn has already departed. On board the vessel, Vaughn learns to his dismay that his stateroom is shared, not by Norma, but by Rose. Back on shore, Porter and Norma realize that they both are glad that she missed the boat.
