Synopsis
Bill Shear, the elderly proprietor of a Reno, Nevada gambling casino, is brought to trial on charges of running a crooked game. His accuser is Mrs. Joanne Ryder, who, while waiting for her divorce to be finalized, has dropped a bundle in Bill's casino. Bill recognizes Joanne as the daughter he has not seen since his divorce years earlier. During the course of the proceedings, Bill recounts the story of his downfall and divorce: As a young attorney, Bill, whose real name is Shayne, comes to the booming silver town of Reno. After establishing a successful practice defending silver miners against the giant companies, Bill's career is on the rise and he marries Jessie Gibbs. Fatherhood follows soon after. When the mines peter out, however, Reno faces the peril of becoming a ghost town until Bill scours the lawbooks and discovers a provision in Nevada law that allows for easy divorce. Bill begins to advertise Reno as the divorce capital of the country, and soon the wives of wealthy men begin to flock to town to file for divorce. Sadly, Bill becomes the victim of his own success when Jessie, feeling neglected by her husband's preoccupation with work and gambling, files for her own divorce and takes their baby daughter East, where she marries the socially prominent John Banton. Meanwhile, Bill's downslide continues when he is disbarred by his colleagues and is forced to turn to gambling to make a living. After listening to her father's sad story, Joanne comforts him by assuring him that Jessie never stopped loving him. Then, benefitting from Bill's sad experiences, she decides to drop her divorce proceedings and return to her husband.
