Synopsis

Outside the town of Vista Grande, two Texas Rangers, Cal Benedict and Trigger Bidwell, witness a gunfight in which Bart Drummond's gang shoot Johnny Emerson and ride away with his brother Buck as a captive. Cal and Trigger approach Johnny, who tells them before he dies that he was with the Drummond gang when they robbed a bank, but when he discovered the stolen money belonged to his friends, the Salezars, he hid it and made a map, telling only Buck where the map was hidden. That night, Cal and Trigger sneak into the Drummond camp and rescue Buck, who races away from them, causing them to suspect that he might be involved in the crime. Meanwhile, ranch owner Dolores Salezar, whose father was killed during the bank robbery, finds Buck hiding out in her bedroom, and, upon learning that he is the brother of her friend Johnny, agrees to help him. She quietly introduces him to Tex Henry, her foreman, not knowing that one of her ranch hands, Pete Jackson, is scheming outside with Drummond to alert their lookout, Karl Holbrook, if Buck appears. Soon, however, Cal and Trigger find Karl and, recognizing him from the shootout, arrest him. They continue on to Dolores' place and convince her that they want to help Buck. When she looks for Buck, however, he has disappeared again, fueling the Rangers' suspicions. At a saloon in town the next day, Pete tips off Drummond that Cal and Trigger are Rangers who have arrested Karl, and Drummond arranges to have Karl sprung from jail. Meanwhile, at the jail, Buck finds Cal and persuades him to let Trigger help him trick Drummond and retrieve the money his way. Buck brings Trigger to the saloon, where he reveals that the map is hidden in Drummond's holster. They plan for Buck to instigate a fistfight with Drummond, which will necessitate that the outlaw remove his holster, at which point Trigger will steal it. Trigger succeeds, but throws the holster out the window just in time for Karl, who has just escaped from prison, to run by and pick it up. Buck then knocks out Drummond, grabs Trigger and races after Karl. As they chase Karl to Drummond's camp, Buck sees one of Drummond's men and knocks him out. Disguised in the man's clothes, Buck sneaks into the camp and grabs Karl, but is quickly caught by the rest of the men, who then also abduct Trigger. Drummond soon arrives with Dolores as his captive, and when Buck lies that the map is at the ranch, Drummond brings Dolores along with them and has some of the men hold Trigger at the camp. After Cal, with Tex, finds them there, he rescues Trigger, arrests the outlaws and instructs Tex to round up a posse in town and meet them at the ranch. Their arrival prompts Buck to start a fight with Drummond, while Cal and Trigger begin a gunfight with other gang members. The posse arrives just in time to help the Rangers win the fight, after which Buck shows Drummond that he was carrying the map all along, then relinquishes it to Dolores. As Buck and Dolores hold hands, the sheriff arrives to arrest the outlaws, and Cal and Trigger ride off into the moonlight.

Notes

Although the opening credits read, "Ray Whitley and His Bar-Six Cowboys," the closing credits only list Whitley, with the name of his character, "Tex Henry." Modern sources add Ethan Laidlaw and Percy Carson to the cast.
