Synopsis

In 1871 a regiment of U. S. Colored Troops (the 10th Cavalry) is stationed at Fort Davis, Texas. Despite the fact that all recruits and noncommissioned officers are blacks, the garrison commander, Colonel Grierson, is a white man. Among the new recruits is Eli Brown, a fun-loving man with an eye for women, who immediately begins wooing the post's young seamstress, Julie. Arrogant Sergeant Hatch has long coveted Julie for himself, but Julie consents to become Brown's wife. Shortly after their wedding, Chief Walking Horse arrives to protest the stealing of horses from the Indians. Colonel Grierson responds by sending Private Armstrong, a close friend of Walking Horse, and a contingent of soldiers, including Trooper Brown, against the white marauders. Aware that Julie was always intrigued and flattered by his sexual advances, Sergeant Hatch waits for Brown to leave the fort and then seduces her. Brown returns to learn of the perfidy and attempts to kill Hatch, an action for which he is punished. After Julie and Brown are reconciled, the Indians, outraged by the slaying of one of their braves, go on a rampage; and the entire regiment is sent into action. The Indians are defeated in a bloody battle, but Trooper Brown and many other soldiers die. As the survivors return to Fort Davis with their Indian prisoners, they reflect on the irony of black men waging war against red men.
