Synopsis

As Dave Webster guards the Wells Fargo stage, which carries a thirty-thousand dollar cargo, to Apache Wells, his driver is shot and they are forced to stop. Dave continues on alone, but when outlaws ambush again, a friend of Dave's, Sunset Carson, suddenly appears and helps him escape. Dave directs Sunset to his father Mark's ranch near town, and they plan to meet later. As Sunset leaves, he spots a cowboy in the hills watching the stage and ropes him. After the stranger falls, unconscious, Sunset realizes it is a woman carrying a bag labeled J. B., but when he turns to get some water, she runs away. In town, Sunset recognizes Julia Bishop, a post office employee, as the stranger, and as he tries to coerce her to admit her identity, post office manager Frank Stevens spies on them. They are interrupted by the news that Dave's stage is missing, the third such disappearance in weeks. Sunset visits the Webster ranch and, after being offered a job by Mark, notices the bag with the letters J. B., but when he queries Mark, the rancher evades his questions. Sunset finds his own father, Pop Underwood, at the local saloon, and tells him that he believes Julia is behind the robberies. Later, Julia and Mark search Sunset's room and knock him out when he returns unexpectedly, but Pop sees Mark sneak out the window. The next day, another stagecoach is ambushed by rancher Lon Ballard, who steals the cargo and throws the stage into Mark's watering hole. Sunset and Pop, seeing the men ride off, deduce from clues at the scene that another theft has just occurred. When they also notice Mark and Julia riding away, and then later see Julia hiding her cowboy disguise, they assume the two are guilty. Later, Ballard brings a special delivery package to the post office and tells Stevens to make sure it is safe. Stevens opens the package in his office, hides the money he finds inside it and then leaves, but returns in time to spy on Julia, who has accidentally found the money and is copying the serial numbers. That night, Ballard and his henchmen attack her, but with help from Sunset and Pop, she fights off the intruders. After Julia reveals that she and Dave are detectives, Sunset and Pop tell her that they are postal inspectors on the same case. The next day, Stevens tells Julia that the previous night Ballard was trying to kill him, because he had caught the rancher with stolen money. Trusting Stevens, Julia reveals the true identity of Sunset and Pop. Stevens immediately orders Ballard and fellow outlaw Hackett to use Pop as bait to kill Sunset. As the outlaws kidnap Pop, Dave and Sunset drain the waterhole, find the missing stages and realize Mark is dead. Julia arrives at the waterhole to pass on Stevens's message that Pop wants to meet them at Ballard's and, suspicious, the three sneak onto the ranch. While Stevens brings a posse to the ranch to attack Ballard, Sunset rescues Pop and a gunfight breaks out. The posse holds up Ballard and Hackett, and Stevens, claiming his innocence, kills Hackett. When he turns his gun on Ballard, however, Sunset shoots him. As Ballard is arrested, Sunset explains to Julia that Stevens was the mastermind behind the robberies and wanted to kill the only two men who could expose him.
