Synopsis
The film explores the lives of five prostitutes working for a madam and her partner Mike in the red light district of the Greek port of Piraeus. Helen, a young woman from the banks of the Danube, comes to work at the brothel after her career as a sculptress is destroyed by the Nazi invasion. Mike becomes attracted to Helen, but Helen, attempting to escape from her sordid life, becomes romantically involved with Peter, a man who is unaware of her current occupation. After the jealous Mike tells him the truth about Helen, Peter leaves; but he returns when the house is closed and asks her to marry him. Mary, another member of the household, falls in love with Angelo, a teenaged student who asks her to marry him; but their relationship becomes strained and finally ends at the insistence of his relatives. The mentally retarded Marina, a nymphomaniac, lives a tragic life, exploited by a sadistic pimp. Anna, proud despite poverty, carefully hides her life from her young son whom she secretly supports with her earnings. She finally marries Captain Nicholas, one of her steady customers, who convinces her that he will be a good father to her son. Myrsini, the newest member of the house, loves the lustful life of prostitution and its financial rewards. When the Greek government closes down the red light district, Myrsini decides to continue clandestinely the business with some of the other women.
