Synopsis

Tom Corbin, a member of the United States Forest Service, shows off his new uniform to his old friend, Kentuck. Tom is concerned that the local lumber company, jointly owned by the attractive Dale McFarland and Bart Williams, has been cutting too much lumber. He tells Riley, the lumber boss, that the company has already cut more timber than their permit allows, and Riley responds by knocking him out. Kentuck and a stranger, Jim Hanlon, find Tom and bring him to the lumber company to recover. When Tom comes to, he first gets even with Riley, then threatens to turn Williams in to Forest Service superintendent Lane. Unknown to Tom, Lane is in league with Williams. They learn that that the Forest Service has sent an investigator to check on local logging practices. Lane suspects that Hanlon is the investigator, and his suspicions are confirmed when Hanlon is seen talking with Tom. Riley tries to shoot Hanlon, but Tom pushes him out of the bullet's path. The next morning when Tom shows Hanlon the illegally logged land, Riley again tries to shoot them. Hanlon then tells Lane that he will have to explain his actions to the department, and Lane kills him. After the murder, Williams blackmails Lane into forging lumber permits to cover the overcutting. To hide his own activities, Williams then sends Riley to kill Lane at the Ranger's cabin in order to place the blame on Tom. Lane confesses to Tom before he dies, but when the sheriff arrives, he arrests Tom for the murders of Hanlon and Lane. After Kentuck helps Tom escape, the sheriff organizes a posse to recapture him. Riley follows Dale when she brings food to Tom's hideout, but his shot misses his target. The sheriff rides up just in time to see Riley's unsuccessful attempt to kill Tom and realizes his innocence. Tom and the sheriff then eavesdrop on a conversation between Williams and Riley that confirms their guilt. With his name is cleared, Tom marries Dale, and she promises to run the lumber company in a responsible manner.

Notes

The plot summary and onscreen credits were taken from a release dialogue script in NYSA records. An onscreen forward notes that "In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt provided the Forest Service with police powers to preserve the remaining timber on the public domain." According to a news item in Film Daily on May 19, 1937, a working title of this film was Beyond Victory, which was also the working title of another Crescent film starring Tom Keene, Under Strange Frags. The news item also mentions that Mary Ireland was to collaborate on the script with Bennett Cohen; however, her participation in the released film has not been confirmed.
