Synopsis

In 1936, Anders works in a factory in Malmö and dreams of becoming a writer. He lives with his parents in a small apartment in Raven's End, a poor section of the city. Anders' father is an alcoholic ne'er-do-well whose desire for an upper-class life prevents him from accepting working-class employment; his mother, a washerwoman, works incessantly to earn money to support their meager existence. Anders' first book is rejected for publication, though he is offered encouragement by a publisher, and he despondently turns to the girl next door for consolation. When she becomes pregnant and expects Anders to marry her, he realizes that he is about to become trapped in Raven's End, and he and a friend set out in search of a better life in Stockholm.
