Synopsis
In 1836, General LaRue, the corrupt chief of the Texas Rangers, imposes a toll on all freight shipments along the Santa Fe trail. Trader Jane Tabor refuses to pay the unfair tax and decides to detour her wagons south of the trail. In response, LaRue orders the rangers to seize all territory west of the Rio Grande. The honest Captain Colt is forced to comply with the general's orders, despite his objections to them. When Jane refuses to pay the toll, Colt arrests her and takes her to LaRue where, to the captain's surprise, the girl forms an alliance with the corrupt general to monopolize all the freight shipments along the trail. Resolving that he can no longer tolerate LaRue's abuses, Colt and his sidekick, Sergeant "Gabby" Whittaker, quit the rangers and send their friend, McNair, to inform General Sam Houston, the President of the Republic of Texas, of LaRue's treachery. Meanwhile, Colt and Gabby join forces with the traders to fight LaRue, and when Purdy, one of the men, is wounded, the two take him to the doctor at Bent Fort, where they are confronted by Jane. Purdy then reveals that Jane is actually the daughter of Captain Burton, the officer whom LaRue framed and shot for treason. Explaining that she is trying to clear her father's name, Jane joins forces with Colt. Soon after, LaRue's henchman, Kincaid, arrives to arrest Colt, and Gabby and Purdy ride for help. Back at headquarters, LaRue sentences Colt to die before a firing squad, but Jane frees him in time and he rides to warn Houston that LaRue's men are waiting in ambush. Meanwhile, LaRue learns that Jane has betrayed him, but before he can punish her, Houston and Colt ride to the rescue and Jane finally exacts revenge on the man that killed her father.
