Synopsis

A series of mysterious murders plague the Circle T Ranch, culminating in the murder of the ranch's owner, Homer Thorpe. Shortly after Thorpe's death, Crash, Dusty and Alibi, the Range Busters, ride into the town of Paso Lobo and come to the aid of Thorpe's daughter Carol when she is bullied by Torrence, the man who is trying to buy the Circle T. Carol offers the trio a job at her ranch, and Crash learns from Doc Stengle, Carol's friend, about the curse of the Phantom, a ghost that haunts the property. The next morning, the Phantom strikes again and shoots at Dusty and Crash, who ride out after the apparition and discover the abandoned mine shaft where Torrence and his men are hiding munitions to smuggle over the border. Torrence diverts Dusty and Crash from the mine, and Crash returns to the ranch while Dusty pursues Torrence's riders. Back at the ranch, Alibi begins to suspect that Carol's blind uncle Rolf can see. As Alibi questions Uncle Rolf, Torrence's men capture Dusty and set a trap for Crash and Alibi. Crash outsmarts them, however, and after freeing Dusty, he warns the sheriff to watch the mine. That night, Dusty and Alibi ride to the mine, while Torrence and Crash fight it out at the ranch. Crash finally subdues Torrence, who admits that he is using the mine as a hideaway, but before he can reveal anymore, a shot rings out from Uncle Rolf's room and kills him. Back at the mine, Dusty and Alibi find a shaft that leads them to Rolf's room and emerge to discover Doc Stengle taking shots at Crash. After apprehending the gunrunners and freeing Rolf, who was tied up by Doc Stengle, they learn that Stengle had discovered a rich vein in the mine and was using the curse of the Phantom to win the ranch for himself.

Notes

This was the first picture in George Weeks's Range Buster series. From 1940-1943 Weeks produced twenty-two "Range Buster" films for Monogram. The first fifteen films were directed by Roy Luby and starred Ray Corrigan, Dusty King and Max Terhune. In late 1942, Robert Tansey took over the direction from Luby, and the last seven films featured different directors as well as the occasional absence of either Corrigan or King. The last film in the series was Bullets and Saddles. For additional information about the series, consult the Series Index. Ray Corrigan and Max Terhune also appeared together in "The Three Mesquiteers" series. The picture was filmed in part at Ray Corrigan Ranch in Simi Valley, CA.
