Synopsis

After old John Dodge dies and leaves his foreman, Gene Autry, in charge of the ranch and his three spoiled grandchildren, the foreman of Rancho Grande has his hands full. When Tom, Kay and their little sister Patricia "Patsy" Fairfield Dodge arrive from the city, Gene explains that their grandfather had mortgaged the ranch to build an irrigation system that would open the southern part of the valley to the faithful employees of the ranch. In response, Tom and Kay think that life on the ranch is boring and resent Gene's authority. Emory Benson, the crooked attorney who wants to seize the mortgage to Rancho Grande, decides to take advantage of the kids' discontent in order to slow the project and thus prevent the bank from renewing the note. Gene slowly wins Kay over to his side, but Tom falls in with a bunch of tenderfoots and invites them to stay at Rancho Grande, where they get in everyone's way. Frog and Gene finally succeed in scaring the dudes off the ranch, but Tom and Kay become angry and plan to leave when a rockslide blocks the irrigation project and injures Jose, a faithful employee of the ranch. The accident brings Tom and Kay to their senses and they pledge to help complete the project on time. However, Benson has other plans and dynamites the train that is carrying the pipe needed to complete the project. As Gene and his men ride to salvage the pipe, Benson rounds up his gang for a showdown. In the ensuing gunplay, Gene subdues Benson and his gang, thus insuring that the project will finish on time.
