Synopsis
When his horse "Life Belt" tests positive for dope after a race, trainer Dan Morgan is ruled off racing. He suspects that rival owner Walter Hammond is to blame, but has no proof. As Dan leaves the track, he overhears young Jimmy Curtis pleading for the life of lame champion "Color Sergeant." Dan buys the horse from Hammond, and forms a partnership with Jimmy. The two take "Life Belt" and "Color Sergeant" to the dilapidated Curtis stables, which are owned by Jimmy's sister June. Dan encourages "Color Sergeant" to swim, which strengthens his lame leg. When Hammond learns of the horse's recovery, he tries to buy him back from Jimmy and, in the following fight, one of his jockeys is wounded. Dan takes the injured man to the hospital and, as he dies, the jockey confesses, in front of the doctor, that he doped "Life Belt." Dan is reinstated at the track, but during a dinner given in his honor, Hammond's men set fire to the Curtis stables. "Life Belt" is killed and Jimmy is injured, but "Color Sergeant" is rescued. Dan enters "Color Sergeant" in the race against Hammond's horse, "Carnation." As Jimmy listens from his hospital bed, "Carnation" wins, but when Dan sees him eat a sugar cube, he remembers that "Carnation" does not like sugar and becomes suspicious. Using a little ether, Dan wipes dye off the horse's nose, proving that a ringer, "Lady Killer," is the winning horse. "Color Sergeant" is then declared the winner and Hammond is banned from racing. With the winning money, Dan and June plan to marry.
