Synopsis
Upon arriving home from Hollywood, the Jones family finds a telegram informing them that John's eccentric uncle Ezra has bequeathed them a gold mine in the Grand Canyon. Given four days to claim their inheritance, the family sets out by trailer and reaches the canyon, where they are aided in locating their property by Henry "Beaver" Howard, a would-be lawyer and guide, who entertains them with stories of Indian massacres. Unknown to the family, Ezra's shack is being used as a hideout by bank robber Floyd "Bat" Douglas and his gang, who take refuge in the cellar when the new residents appear. One of the gang poses as H. Jenkins Pierson, a collector of Indian relics, and offers to buy the place while recounting stories of Big Chief, who he claims haunts the shack. Another gang member, Pete, poses as Professor Mathews, a geologist who pronounces the mine worthless. While Jack Jones, the eldest son, develops a crush on Daisy Landers, Bat's gun moll, daughter Lucy begins a flirtation with ranger Barry Frazier. Barry becomes suspicious of Pierson, the professor and Daisy, and arrests the professor. Despite Barry's suspicions, father John Jones is about to accept Pierson's offer when son Bobby discovers a gold nugget. Thwarted by Bobby's discovery, Daisy decides to get rid of the family by slipping some of the stolen bank loot into John's wallet, which results in his arrest. When Bat and his gang appear at the jail to free their pal, the professor, John calls for the police and Barry responds by arresting the real robbers. Although the mine proves worthless, the Joneses are rewarded with $2,000 for the capture of the bank robbers.
