Synopsis

Instead of working in the local foundry like his father, Quackser Fortune earns a living in Dublin by collecting horse manure and selling it to housewives for their gardens. He carries on an affair with Betsy Bourke, one of his customers, until he meets and immediately falls in love with Zazel Pierce, a wealthy American student at Trinity College. She begins to instruct him on Dublin's history and then invites Quackser to a dress ball; once there, however, she ignores him in favor of her more affluent and sophisticated classmates. The students' taunting of Quackser results in a scuffle, but he manages to escape with Zazel to an elegant hotel. She completes her seduction of him and leaves during the night. In the morning, Quackser goes to her room at Trinity only to find that she has moved out. Quackser's more immediate concern, however, is a new city ordinance which bans horses from the streets of Dublin, thereby ruining his livelihood. Dejected, he releases the horses into the city's streets to prevent them from being taken to the glue factory and then goes on a drinking spree. His luck changes when he learns that a distant cousin in the Bronx in New York has died and left him over £200; Quackser purchases a bus and uses it to give historical tours of Dublin.
