In the 1980s, the major tobacco company that research scientist Victor DeNoble worked for asked him to find a substitute for nicotine that would not cause heart attacks and he succeeded. But in doing so, his research proved that cigarettes were addictive, a fact that the tobacco industry had denied.

Synopsis

In the 1980s, the major tobacco company that research scientist Victor DeNoble worked for asked him to find a substitute for nicotine that would not cause heart attacks and he succeeded. But in doing so, his research proved that cigarettes were addictive, a fact that the tobacco industry had denied. Despite the confidentiality agreement he had signed, DeNoble testified at the 1994 Congressional hearings on tobacco which resulted in the first federal regulation of the industry.
