Synopsis

Arriving in southern California, nurse Joan Olson finds her recently divorced sister, Grace, dead from an overdose of sleeping tablets. She and her sister's ex-husband, police detective Art Devlin, learn that Grace recently gave birth to a child fathered by Devlin. Although nurse Irene Kersey and Dr. Leon Claudel, who delivered Grace's baby, deny knowledge of the drug prescription, Joan takes a job on the doctor's staff and discovers records proving that her sister had been a patient in his nursing home. Irene, beaten by Terry, one of Claudel's orderlies, escapes and reveals that Claudel is a heroin addict dealing in black-market babies. Devlin forces Claudel to confess that he has sold Grace's infant to the Mayhalls, a wealthy childless couple. Upon finding the baby in a happy home, Devlin returns to Joan.
