Synopsis
Kate Hoover, an American student at an exclusive school in Versailles, spies from her dormitory window on Philippe, a sculptor living next to the school at the home of his wealthy patron and mistress, widow Anne de Limeuil. Unable to sleep one night because of a party at Anne's, Kate dresses and clambers down a wall into the garden. Fearful of joining in the activities, she wanders down a street and witnesses a fatal hit-and-run automobile accident which she mentions to no one. In the days that follow, Kate frequently waves to Philippe, and after he surprises her in the garden, he becomes intrigued with the fact that she is obviously infatuated with him. The worldly Anne, fearful of the threat to her own relationship with Philippe, suggests he get the young girl out of his system by having an affair with her, and to make things easier, she leaves town for a few days. Kate spends several happy days with Philippe, but when he takes her for a drive, she recognizes his car as the one belonging to the hit-and-run driver. Afterwards she makes love with Philippe, but her infatuation quickly pales at his lack of candor about the accident; and she leaves while he is sleeping and returns to school.
