Synopsis
When his father scolds him for damaging the roof of his house, Brill, a young farm boy, runs away from his Pennsylvania home to make his fortune in New York City. He falls in with a gang of shoeshine boys and paper carriers working under Rick, a young hood who takes half of their earnings. On his second day in the big city, Brill wins most of Rick's money in a crap game and takes his new friend, Paco, for a night on the town. When Rick's gang beats up Brill for taking their money, he is rescued by a prostitute, Suzy, who takes him home, washes his wounds, buys him clothes and shows him the sights of Manhattan. After seeing Suzy and another prostitute arrested by the police, Brill decides to buy a bicycle and return home. En route, his bicycle is wrecked by a truck, and he spends the night with an elderly Negro couple from whom he learns the meaning of self-respect. The next day a sadder but wiser Brill arrives home and gives his father the remainder of his fortune.
