Synopsis

In the summer of 2005, the first lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people's Pride parade was scheduled to take place in the Latvian capital of Riga. But the parade stirred up a deep divide in Latvian Society. Anyone taking part in the parade found themselves subject to insults on the part of counter-demonstrators, who also spat at the parade throng, and sprayed holy water as well as excrement on them. But it did not end there. Families found themselves torn apart, pride supporters lost their jobs and pastors were expelled from the church for free thinking. The Latvian community could never have imagined that crowds of Western reinforcements would flock to both sides, and that the media would be so eager to report it all. Here, we follow the Pride parade from its inception in 2005 to the organizers' canceling the parade in 2010 to avoid violent clashes, gaining an intimate insight into the opinions and life stories of the individuals on both fronts.
