Synopsis

In October of 2009, amid widespread violence following a disputed election, a skateboard park opens. Officials and Afghan boys and girls gather for the momentous event. Here, we observe how dedicated volunteers helped to accomplish this triumph. It all began in 2007 when professional skateboarders from around the world began to teach skating to Afghan youth. Using an abandoned Soviet fountain, these initial sessions led to the foundation of Skateistan, Afghanistan's first coeducational skateboarding school. The organization, now a registered NGO, worked with a global network to create the skateboard park and and educational facility.
