Synopsis
A gang of thieves has been propagating a myth that the ghost of miserly rancher Hiram Moore is riding the range, and has hired a man named Tex to impersonate the ghost in order to scare prospective buyers off the Moore property. It is rumored that Moore, who died in debt a year before, kept a treasure hidden somewhere on the ranch, and that a clue to the treasure's location is hidden in a portrait of Moore. Moore's granddaughter Jeanne arrives from Santa Fe to establish her claim to the property and meets Jerry Lane, who hopes to buy a ranch in the area. At the Moore ranch auction, Jerry outbids Jeanne and the thieves for the portrait and also buys the ranch, inviting Jeanne to stay there with him. He also hires a Cockney kleptomaniac named Eddie Parsons as his valet. Gang member Brandon, Jerry's new neighbor, has an accomplice, Perdita, impersonate a maid on the Moore ranch so she can spy on Jerry. One night, while the "phantom" distracts Jerry, Jeanne and Eddie, Perdita steals the portrait, unaware that Eddie has already stolen the map to the treasure that was hidden inside the picture frame. The map reveals that the treasure is hidden at Tower Rocks and can only be found during a full moon. A week later, on the day the moon is full, Tex, who is being used by Brandon and the gang, threatens to sell his information to Jerry, and is shot by Brandon's foreman, Mark Graydon. Although Jerry and Tex had fought earlier, Jerry tries to save Tex, and he confesses he was hired by someone, but dies before he can name him. Brandon then frames Jerry for Tex's murder, and the sheriff arrests him and appoints deputy Barnes to guard the Moore ranch in case Jerry escapes, which he does. Brandon and his men then attack Barnes and force Eddie to give them the treasure map. Jerry returns and unties Barnes, instructing him to have the sheriff meet him at Tower Rocks. Inside the house, Jerry holds up the thieves and retrieves the map, then escapes during a scuffle to Tower Rocks, where he ties a rope across the path of the encroaching gang, then fights them when their horses trip. Graydon escapes on a horse, however, and Jerry goes after him. During their fight, Graydon nearly falls over a cliff, and as he hangs, Jerry forces him to confess to Tex's murder. The sheriff and his posse then arrive and take Graydon into custody. In the light of the full moon, Eddie, Jeanne and Jerry find Hiram's treasure chest, which contains a half-million dollars in gold. When Jerry insists the money rightfully belongs to Jeanne, she insists it is his, at which point Eddie suggests they pool their resources.
