Synopsis

Peggy Milburn, eager to help her husband, Boyd, a struggling inventor, goes to the apartment of Roger Stanwick, a wealthy bachelor, to seek his aid; when he realizes she is offering only her friendship and tries to overpower her, she kills him; and for their child's sake, Boyd takes the blame for the crime, being discovered near the body, and is sentenced to life imprisonment. Meanwhile, his inventions bring wealth to Peggy; and having changed her name and achieved a place in society, she aspires to marry Dorothy to a title, though the girl loves Paul Wallis. Boyd returns after 15 years, is introduced as a family friend, and backs Dorothy in her decision to marry for love, though his wife threatens to expose him. Judge Thompson tells Paul about the girl's father; an argument ensues; and Bill, a prisonmate of Boyd's, kills the judge. Paul is accused of the crime, but Dorothy learns the truth from Boyd, and Bill is caught. Peggy repents and vows to begin again with her husband and daughter.
