Passport to Alcatraz

60m 1940

Brief Synopsis

George Hollister (Jack Holt), crack investigator for the NYC police, is assigned to run down the enemy aliens who dynamited a Detroit munitions plant. The trail takes him to a customs inspector who is known to have honored fake passports provided by Leon Fenten (C. Henry Gordon), chief henchman of Drexel Stuyvesant (Clay Clement) who heads the sabotage ring. Aided by his partner Ray Nolan (Noah Beery Jr). Hollister arrests an agent named Reed (Robert Fiske) and takes his place using the fake passport. As Reed, he is met by Karol Roy (Cecilia Callejo), an innocent assistant, who takes him to Fenten. Working undercover, Hollister is still unable to learn the name of the head man, not even from dumb gang-member Hank Kircher (Maxie Rosenbloom). Stuyvesant warns Fenten of his suspicions about "Reed" and the latter gives Hollister an assignment as a test.

Synopsis

Assigned to track down a ring trafficking in the sale of fake passports to foreign saboteurs, government agent George Hollister follows a trail which leads to the customs inspector who has honored the forged passports. Hollister discovers that the passports have been supplied by Leon Fenten, an aid to wealthy businessman Drexel Stuyvesant, who is the clandestine head of the ring. After arresting the inspector, Hollister takes his place and arrests Reed when he presents a fake passport. Failing to learn Reed's mission and the identity of Fenten's boss, Hollister decides to pose as Reed to infiltrate the ring. Hollister is met at the dock by Karol Roy who, believing that he is Reed, takes him to Fenten. Stuyvesant informs Fenten that the next target is the New York Chemical Works, in which Stuyvesant is an officer, and he orders that Hollister take the night watchman's place. Ordered to kill the watchman, Hollister arrests him instead and then plants a phony story about the man's death. Meanwhile, Ray Nolan, Hollister's partner, has been romancing Karol, and learning that she is innocent, falls in love with her. Hollister decides to trick Fenten into exposing his boss by reporting that someone at the plant has tampered with his work, and Fenten almost falls for his trap until he learns that the watchman is still alive. Suspicious of Hollister, Fenten replaces him with another agent, but Stuyvesant makes a fatal error when he repeats Hollister's story of plant tampering to the police commissioner and Hollister realizes that he must have heard the story from Fenten and therefore must be the head of the ring. Before Hollister can act on the information, Karol informs him that Stuyvesant and Fenten are planning to flee that night, and Hollister and his men rush down to the plant to prevent the agents from sabotaging it. With Fenten and Stuyvesant under arrest, Karol is found innocent and Ray marries her to make her an American citizen.
