Synopsis

In 1949, the first Soviet bomb was dropped on a secret nuclear test site in Semipalatinsk, Kazakhstan with little regard for its estimated 200,000 residents. Today, the population continues to live with the consequences with one in 20 children born with birth defects. Orphanages are overrun with abandoned children. The boss of the city's maternity clinic wants to clean-up the genetic pool by introducing a passport which would prevent the region's women from having children. Here, we follow a local woman from the test-site who is forced to fight for the right to keep her unborn child, despite the potential risks.
